Copeland to Showcase Vilter Industrial Natural Refrigerant Portfolio at IIAR Expo

Technology extends industrial market applications while supporting sustainability goals

ST. LOUIS, Feb. 26, 2025 – Copeland, a global leader in sustainable climate solutions, today announced that the company will be showcasing new technologies at the upcoming International Institute of All-Natural Refrigeration (IIAR) 2025 Expo, March 3–4, Phoenix, AZ, in booth #229. These will include the company’s Vilter-branded industrial-grade CO2 transcritical compressor and, for the first time in North America, the Vilter VQ95 ammonia heat pump. Special educational sessions at the booth will further showcase Copeland’s commitment to investing in sustainable solutions for industrial heating and refrigeration applications.

Governmental regulations and corporate sustainability goals are driving many companies away from higher-GWP hydrofluorocarbons (HFCs) and toward ultra-low-GWP and natural refrigerants. In turn, industrial refrigeration end users and contractors are increasingly adopting new compression technologies based on CO2 and ammonia. At IIAR, Copeland will share new insights on applying natural refrigerants, including recent research on ideal opportunities for industrial CO2 transcritical systems.

Built around the durable Vilter single-screw compressor platform, CO2 transcritical and subcritical compressors enable the increased adoption of CO2 in industrial refrigeration. They help contractors and operators in cold storage, food and beverage, pharmaceutical, chemical, and other industrial processing applications to meet their sustainability goals with a simplified design and more cost-effective architecture.

Vilter’s robust CO2 single-screw compressor units are designed to enable contractors to field-erect large refrigeration systems at a low cost — proving that central, field-erected CO2 systems can be more cost-effective than utilizing multiple racks. Utilizing Copeland’s Vilter CO2 single screw compressors can reduce the number of compressors, pipes, fittings, and length of pipe. This simplification reduces complexity, installation costs, and long-term maintenance spending.

Also at IIAR, and for the first time in North America, Copeland will showcase the Vilter VQ95 industrial ammonia heat pump technology. Special educational sessions in the booth will explore how this innovative single-stage heat pump is designed to help decarbonize district heating and industrial process heating applications, including in food and beverage production.

“Copeland has a powerhouse portfolio of products across heating and refrigeration spaces, including CO2 and ammonia-based refrigerants and heat pump solutions,” said Michael Gersmeyer, Vilter senior product manager, for Copeland. “These new products reflect our commitment to creating best-fit technologies for our customers and demonstrate our ongoing investment in sustainable natural refrigerant technologies.”

The educational sessions that will be held at Copeland’s booth #229 at IIAR include:

  • CO2, reimagined: How technology enables cost-effective installations
  • Simple, sustainable, and scalable: A new approach to high-temperature heat pumps
  • Ammonia refrigeration: A timeless solution for a sustainable future
